Space Mountain is the oldest operating roller coaster in Florida and one of the few attractions on both coasts that came to Walt Disney World first.
The in-the-dark, indoor roller coaster opened at Magic Kingdom park Jan. 15, 1975 before coming to Disneyland park in 1977.
Other Disney favorites like Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion and it's a small world came to the California theme park first before the attractions made it to Florida.
Space Mountain was just the second attraction built specifically for Magic Kingdom, the first being Country Bear Jamboree.
There are now five versions of Space Mountain at Disney theme parks around the globe, with attractions in Tokyo Disneyland (1983), Disneyland Paris (1995) and Hong Kong Disneyland.
As we celebrate the 40th birthday of one of the most well-known and most popular coasters at Disney World, take a look at the gallery above for photos of Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain through the years.
